Don't Look Back
“But Jesus said to him, ‘No one, having put his hand to the plow, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God.’” (Luke 9:62)
I grew up listening to rock music, and that’s not always a good thing. Being raised in a Christian home, my parents made sure that our song selections never got too far out of control. That said, I tried to stick with bands that weren’t associated with devil worship or drugs. I liked bands named after places – Chicago, Kansas, America, etc. And my favorite childhood band was Boston. I distinctly remember getting a CD player one year for Christmas and Boston’s first album was my first CD.
I wore that CD out, and it wasn’t long before I was looking for their second album. It was entitled “Don’t Look Back,” based on the title track from that album. The song says, “Don’t look back! A new day is breaking.” It’s just a simple anthem about pressing forward, and perhaps it could be the soundtrack for today’s verse. When a potential Christ-follower wanted to go home and say goodbye to his family before following Jesus, he probably wasn’t prepared for Christ’s response.
Jesus said, “No one, having put his hand to the plow, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God.” Seems a little harsh to tell a potential disciple that he can’t say goodbye to his family, but Jesus was making a point we need to understand – you’ve can’t move forward if you’re looking back. When you sign up to follow Jesus, He is your highest allegiance and you don’t need to spend your time longing for the things of your past. Don’t look back! Keep your eyes fixed on Jesus (Heb. 12:1-2).
