Where Your Treasure Is?

“For where you treasure is, there your heart will be also.”  (Luke 12:34)

What comes to mind when you hear the word “treasure?”  Maybe you think about Treasure Island or Indiana Jones on one of his treasure-hunting adventures.  It’s not a word we use very much, but it used to be a general reference to money.  Churches and many other organizations still have “treasurers” who assist with the oversight of finances.  When Jesus mentioned the word “treasure,” He was talking about money & possessions rather than something buried in the ground or lost at sea.

Jesus instructed His disciples to lead very simple lives and to trust God to provide all their needs.  He warned against the accumulation of wealth and material possessions by using a very simply principle – “where your treasure is, there you heart will be also.”  What did Jesus mean?  To use a modern analogy, open the banking app on your mobile device.  Take a look at your expenses over the course of the past few months.  It’s very likely you are passionate about the things you’re spending money on.

I don’t’ know about you, but my monthly bills include a mortgage because I’m passionate about providing a home for my family.  I also pay a monthly premium for medical insurance because I’m also passionate about my family’s health.  And my monthly expenses also include a tithe to the local church because I’m passionate about Jesus.  In fact, He should be the first and greatest passion of our lives!  So, when you follow your money, what does it say about the greatest priorities of your life?
