Falling on Jesus

“Then He looked at them and said, ‘What then is this that is written: ‘The stone which the builders rejected has become the chief cornerstone’?  Whoever falls on that stone will be broken; but on whomever it falls, it will grind him to powder.’” (Luke 20:17-18)

Today we’re looking at a powerful passage from the Word of God.  These words of Jesus were directed at the Pharisees, but they’re applicable to all of us.  Jesus quoted Psalm 118 – “The stone which the builders rejected has become the chief cornerstone.”  You and I know that Jesus is that chief cornerstone, but unfortunately, He has been rejected by Jews and Gentiles alike.  The Pharisees were certainly a part of that – they rejected Jesus when they should have received Him.

We need to pay close attention to the next words of Jesus – “whoever falls on that stone will be broken.”  In other words, if you surrender your life to God through faith in Jesus, you WILL be broken.  But how?  God will break you of your pride, and He will also break you through the convicting power of the Holy Spirit.  Let me be clear – it’s not a bad thing to be broken by God.  It is only in being broken by God that He can rebuild you into the image of His Son.  God breaks the old and re-creates us new.

The alternative is much worse – “but on whomever it falls, it will grind him to powder.”  So we have a choice – we can either be broken by falling on Jesus, or we can be pounded to dust for failing to surrender our lives to Him.  The obstinate Pharisees refused to fall on Jesus, so they will be pounded by His wrath at the judgment seat of Christ.  How about you friend?  Have you allowed God to break you by placing your faith in Jesus?  Take heart in knowing that God always rebuilds ever person that He breaks.
