More Than Enough God

“Therefore they gathered them up, and filled twelve baskets with the fragments of the five barley loaves which were left over by those who had eaten.” (John 6:13)

The masses were incredibly attracted to Jesus.  On one occasion, many people came to follow Jesus, so He sat on the side of a mountain and began to teach.  About lunchtime, Jesus asked Philip where they could turn to provide food for such a large crowd.  John tells us that Jesus inquired of Philip, not because He didn’t know what to do, but to test his faith.  Philip simply replied that 200 denarii (200 days’ wages) would not be enough to feed such a crowd.

Andrew, Peter’s brother, was able to find one small boy who had five loaves and two fish, but he asked, “What are they among so many?’” (John 6:9)  Jesus told the disciples to make the people sit down, and then He did something miraculous – He gave thanks and started passing out the five loaves and two fish.  Keep in mind, John tells us there were 5,000 men in attendance, not including their wives and children.  And yet, when the meal was done, there were 12 basket fulls left over!

Why did Jesus perform such an extraordinary miracle?  I think He wanted His fellow Jews to know that He is the long-awaited Messiah who had come to save each member of the 12 tribes.  The miracle also proves that we serve a God who is more than enough.  The people only needed lunch, but Jesus provided much more.  Paul said Christ is “able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think” (Eph. 3:20).  You can trust that He is always more than enough and everything you need.
